CHEMIN DE FER MUSÉE: CHAMBY–BLONAY

The Chemin de Fer-Musée (Museum Railway; May to early July & mid-Aug to Oct Sat & Sun 10am–6.30pm; early July to mid-Aug Fri 2–6pm, Sat & Sun 10am–6.30pm; Fr.15–50 return; blonay-chamby.ch) has steam trains running on a 3km stretch of track between Chamby, a stop on the Golden Pass line and Blonay on the Vevey–Les Pléiades line, as well as a depot full of old rolling stock.

CHEMIN DE FER MONTREUX–GLION–ROCHERS-DE-NAYE (MGN)

Heading in the other direction, creaking trains wind their way northeast from Montreux up to the giant Rochers-de-Naye summit (Swiss Pass holders – who travel free to Caux – pay Fr.25 return for the Caux–Naye section). Emerging from a series of corkscrew tunnels you come first to GLION, an eyrie of a village perched amid fields of narcissi directly above Montreux, with jaw-dropping views over the lake and the Château de Chillon. A steep funicular also serves Glion from Territet mainline station on the lakeside below. The summit is the rugged vantage point of ROCHERS-DE-NAYE (2045m), with incredible views over the lake and plenty of hiking trails over the grassy hilltops.
